STREET SMART | Vaughan Mills Welcomes WLKN to the 6 (FINALLY)

I could talk about how people will drive 4 hours to Montreal, just to score a WLKN t-shirt. I could talk about the brands: Puma, Vitaly, OBEY, Crooks & Castles, Fairplay Los Angeles, PUMA, Publish, Fashion/Overload just to name a few. I could also talk about how everyone who works at WLKN looks like they belong either on a Drake album or in Justin Bieber’s Sorry video.

But let’s just say that when the gate lifts on Saturday am and I walk in as WLKN’s first-ever GTA customer (proud moment) I decide that I’m just going to live here from now on. WLKN (pronounced walk-in, like walk-in closet) is a streetwear brand out of Montreal, started with the hopes of making streetwear culture more accessible and family-friendly. The first store opened in 2010 and has quickly gained a massive following thanks to its brand diversity, its support of local talent and a commitment to incredible customer service. Basically, it’s street but way friendlier. Speaking of Drake, check out WLKN’s version of Hotline Bling (homepage, click on the expand icon to see the video, turn it up) and you’ll totally get the vibe.
The store itself is gorgeous - all black, wood panelling and bright track lights, with huge pics of Kylie Jenner looking awesome in the front window (I’m told they have an exclusive on Kylie at Vaughan Mills). I’m not super familiar with some of the brands so WLKN CEO Pierre Mercier, on hand to celebrate the grand opening, takes me through the store. There are men’s and women’s sections but, as we all know with streetwear, customers often shop both sides of the store. There are loads of familiar brands plus I’m introduced to some LA and Toronto-based brands that I’ve never heard about until now. They stock tonnes of better basics - think your black and white tees but softer and more flattering, your jogging pants, but way cooler.
The WLKN-branded sweatshirts and tees (the ones that people used to drive 4 hours to get) are everywhere but there are tonnes of solid dresses, tees, pants & sweats for those who don’t like overt branding. We head back to the shoe section where I see Pumas & Adidas hi-tops (need these), VANS & Timberlands - basically a perfect edit of all the coolest kicks. The back of the store is pretty much entirely taken up by a massive wall of ball caps and I snatch up an exclusive limited-edition WLKN 6 hat, made especially for the Toronto opening.

I go in with a budget in mind but blow past it because I literally can’t leave without the black & grey tees, Puma joggers and rose gold QUAY aviators that I try on. Welcome to the 6 WLKN! So happy you’re finally here.

Want to check out WLKN for yourself? Find it on the map here. SO. GOOD.
