Rooftop Beekeeping 

In 2017, as part of our commitment to sustainability, Vaughan Mills installed 4 beehives on our roof in collaboration with Alvéole Montreal. Each year these hives produce around 10 to 15 kilograms of honey and production of Vaughan Mills honey contributes to increasing local honey production, flower pollination and providing a greener urban setting.

Alvéole, is a social company specialized in urban apiculture, created in 2012 in Montreal. Their goal is to change the urban landscape of Canadian cities, one beehive at a time.

Their mission is to protect the bees that have been in decline all over the world, while increasing the general population’s awareness about their essential role for the environment. The bee is a pollinator insect that plays a major role in the production of fruit, vegetables and nuts: one third of our food supply relies on their pollination!

Consumption and Waste Reduction

Vaughan Mills’ innovative and effective waste and recycling program diverts cardboard, paper, cans, glass, plastic bottles, wood skids, and grease from ending up in a landfill. Enhanced 3-stream recycling units can be found throughout the property. Blue boxes, ongoing training, and signage help our retailers to do their part too.

Vaughan Mills takes pride in applying a number of initiatives to reduce our electricity consumption in response to the grid system reliability and consumption concerns. Parts of our roof have heat reflective properties to reduce heat during the warmer months.

Sorting Station

Vaughan Mills is committed to promoting sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint. We’re excited to announce our new sorting stations to our food court.

We kindly encourage all our valued customers to join us in this eco-conscious effort by bringing their trays to the designated sorting stations.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and continue to enjoy a cleaner, greener future at Vaughan Mills.

 

Urban Gardening

In partnership with Backyard Urban Farming Company, a section of our property has been designated for to growing organic produce and herbs which are donated to a local food bank.

Smart Parking

 Vaughan Mills is pleased to provide its shoppers with parking spaces for electronic and hybrid vehicles. ChargePoint charging stations are located in the south parking lot, near Entrance 4A and Tesla Superchargers are located in the north parking lot across from Entrance 2

To promote smarter commuting and greener efforts, Vaughan Mills also provides our tenants with commuter parking stalls.

 

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable building operations, Vaughan Mills achieved BOMA BEST’s Gold level of sustainability in 2024.
BOMA BEST is Canada’s largest environmental assessment and certification program for existing buildings with over 5,000 buildings obtaining a certification or recertification.
